On Friday, 20 June, our group’s Simon Haugaard successfully defended his PhD thesis, “Molecular & Metabolic Remodelling in Horse Atrial Fibrillation: Multi-Omics Insights & Metformin as a Therapeutic Strategy.”

In his PhD work, Simon investigated the molecular changes in horses with naturally occurring atrial fibrillation (AF) and explored the potential of metformin as a novel therapeutic strategy for horses with the disease. The thesis brings together several molecular studies and translational insights, shedding new light on AF mechanisms and a possible upstream treatment intervention. The project was made possible through several national and international collaborations, supported by generous funding from the Independent Research Fund Denmark and the Danish Cardiovascular Academy.

Simon will remain part of the equine cardiac group—now turning his focus towards studying AF in athletes.

A big thank you to everyone who attended and helped make the day so special.
